If you’re looking for a dinner that never fails to impress, this baked ziti is exactly what you need. It’s the kind of comforting, cheesy pasta casserole that disappears quickly at family gatherings, potlucks, or casual dinner parties.
This recipe became popular in my kitchen after I first tasted it at a work event. One bite was enough — everyone immediately asked for the recipe. Since then, it has become one of my most requested dishes. Whether served for a holiday meal or a simple weeknight dinner, it’s always a success.
The combination of tender pasta, rich meat sauce, creamy layers, and melted cheese makes this dish irresistible. And if you prefer a vegetarian version, you can simply leave out the meat — it’s still absolutely delicious.
Recipe Overview
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 45 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour
Servings: 10
Yield: One 9×13-inch casserole
Ingredients
1 pound dry ziti pasta
1 onion, chopped
1 pound lean ground beef
2 (26-ounce) jars spaghetti sauce
6 ounces provolone cheese, sliced
1 ½ cups sour cream
6 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
How to Make Baked Ziti
1. Cook the Pasta
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a rolling boil. Add the ziti and cook until just al dente, about 8 minutes. The pasta should still have a slight bite since it will continue cooking in the oven. Drain well and set aside.
2. Prepare the Meat Sauce
While the pasta cooks, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and ground beef. Cook until the beef is fully browned and the onion becomes soft and translucent. Drain any excess grease if necessary.
Stir in both jars of spaghetti sauce and reduce the heat slightly. Let the sauce simmer gently for about 15 minutes to allow the flavors to blend together.
3. Prepare the Baking Dish
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly butter a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
4. Layer the Casserole
- Spread half of the cooked ziti evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Place the sliced provolone cheese over the pasta, covering it as evenly as possible. Next, spoon the sour cream over the provolone layer and gently spread it out.
- Add half of the prepared meat sauce over the sour cream layer. Top with the remaining ziti pasta, followed by the shredded mozzarella cheese. Finish by spreading the rest of the meat sauce over everything. Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the top for extra flavor.
5. Bake
Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for about 30 minutes, or until everything is heated through and the cheese has fully melted.
For a slightly golden top, you can broil it for 1–2 minutes at the end, watching carefully to avoid burning. Let the baked ziti rest for about 5–10 minutes before serving. This helps the layers set and makes slicing easier.
Tips for the Best Baked Ziti
- Cook the pasta just to al dente to avoid mushy texture.
- Let the sauce simmer to deepen the flavor.
- Allow the casserole to rest before serving so it holds together beautifully.
- You can prepare it ahead of time and refrigerate before baking.
Make It Meatless
If you prefer a vegetarian version, simply skip the ground beef. The layers of cheese and sauce still create a rich, satisfying dish that everyone will enjoy. You can also add sautéed mushrooms, zucchini, or spinach for extra flavor and texture.
Serving Suggestions
Baked ziti is perfect when paired with a crisp green salad, garlic bread, or roasted vegetables. Garnish with fresh basil or oregano to enhance the flavors. For a heartier meal, serve alongside a bowl of creamy polenta or fluffy rice. This dish is just as enjoyable for weeknight dinners as it is for special occasions.
Make-Ahead & Freezing Tips
This casserole is ideal for meal prep. Assemble it a day ahead, cover tightly, and refrigerate until ready to bake. Leftovers can also be stored in the freezer for up to 2–3 months; thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating. This makes baked ziti a convenient option for busy families or for preparing meals in advance.
A Little Background
Baked ziti originated from traditional Italian baked pasta dishes, particularly from Southern Italy, and gained popularity in Italian-American households. It became a go-to comfort food because of its simple ingredients, ease of preparation, and ability to feed a crowd. Today, it’s considered a classic casserole and is often served at family gatherings and potlucks.
